Peritoneal Mesothelioma Attorneys

Mesothelioma and Asbestos Exposure

Peritoneal mesothelioma is the second most common form of mesothelioma, affecting patients in approximately 15% to 20% of diagnosed cases. Largely caused by asbestos exposure, peritoneal mesothelioma affects the peritoneum, the lining of the abdomen. This type of cancer is also referred to as abdominal mesothelioma. Although asbestos fibers are most often inhaled and lodge themselves in the lungs and the lining around the lungs, some people develop cancerous cells in the lining around the abdomen rather than the lining around the lungs (which causes pleura mesothelioma).

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma, it is important that you contact an attorney experienced with asbestos exposure as soon as possible. Mesothelioma symptoms may not appear for as long as 20 to 50 years following exposure. An attorney can help evaluate your situation to determine when and where exposure may have occurred, as well as whether you may be eligible to recover financial compensation.

What Causes Peritoneal Mesothelioma?

There are different theories as to why a person may develop peritoneal mesothelioma rather than pleural mesothelioma. One such theory is based upon the assumption that the asbestos fibers may be inhaled and transferred to the abdominal area through the lymph node system. Another theory is that asbestos fibers may be ingested and then may make their way through the intestinal tract, where they work themselves to the peritoneum. Regardless of how the fibers make their way to the abdominal region, the end result is that the fibers cause inflammation and then may form cancerous tumors. These tumors may grow rapidly and will eventually cover the abdominal cavity.
